Finally I have assembled and glued the three walls of the cabin and the 2 floors, the roof and the facade are missing but there is still time for that.

Now I am doing a small toilet room, I don't know what to call it, as it will only have a toilet. Manuel and his wife are old and it´s better to avoid doing their most pressing needs in an external toilet lol, as maybe it can be done in this type of constructions.

So I'm building a little room under the stairs to place the toilet, here you see it in more detail.

It is under construction and not glued because I need to make a functioning door. Btw, do you see the wall? I finally achieved the colours I wanted, although they are not appreciated in the photo, in reality they look good I think, modesty aside.

Now I am also in the making of the fireplace.

He utilizado papel, cartón y madera, falta el fondo aun y pintar etc.

I have used paper, cardboard and wood, the background is still missing , I need to paint etc. The idea is to be stone on the outside and brick on the inside. I'm covering it with putty and shaping into stones. When it dries I will cover the missing parts and paint. Let's see how it goes.

Another idea I had is to make a shelf with bricks. I have some scale bricks that I once bought, they are very cool. I thought it would be convenient to have storage space and I wanted it to be rustic, with materials available to its inhabitants. My grandfather (rip) used to do all kinds of things with materials he accumulated, he didn´t throw anything away which upset my grandmother (rip), and then made all kinds of gadgets. My grandmother was not always amused because she did not want her house to look bad, but for this cabin these memories come handy.

As you can see, Manuel has been making repairs and additions to the original cabin, he has built these shelves with bricks and some boards. In the photo the colours do not come out very well, but I liked the idea. You can also see "the cement" with which the bricks have been glued.

I am also experimenting with rugs, I want this cabin to have rustic rugs, although I have not yet hit the mark.

First I worked with materials that I have. This one in the photo above I do not know its name, a kind of net fabric.  To prevent it from fraying I put an edge with tape but I do not like it, I don´t know how to sew nor do I have a machine, that would be ideal.

Then I wanted to experiment with prints, for which I bought canvas for printers. The instructions are for printing with an inkjet printer which I do not have, but a laser. I did not like the effect, the colours are very faded, or it was the file I got, in conclusion, not good. The texture looks a bit plastic.

I also bought cotton fabric for printers as I want to do other things. I read very carefully Jodi's tutorials on her blog "My miniature Madness" and I tried doing it even with a laser printer. I tried a template of kitchen towels and others, a gift from Jodi and I think they turned out well, now it remains to be seen what happens when you cut and remove the paper.

Gracias Jodi!!

Thanks Jodi!! They are very pretty.

I continued experimenting with rugs, not for the cabin but decorative rugs. I have to say that from now on I will no longer buy them, they look great, if you get a file with good resolution, they are ideal. I am not going to remove the paper that covers the back as it gives them consistency. Researching to print rugs, I know that some people print them on velvet paper and other materials that give the texture of a carpet, unfortunately I could not get them and for now I am satisfied with the cotton fabric for printers.

The ones above have come out a little faded, maybe the image used. They can be considered "vintage". The ones below are perfect!!

And with a view of the cabin where you can see another mat I made by gluing threads (I don't love it either) I'll leave you for today.

Cuidaros mucho. Take care.

Un abrazo,

Alex.

  2. Oh, Alex, now you're asking something. I also don't know how it's named in common English...I think a bathroom with just only a toilet, is called a "loo"??? Because there's an expression of: 'going to the loo' ;O) ?? My knowledge of the English language isn't that good :).
In small houses, as your cabin, your toilet gets the best place for it, tucked under the stairs. Manuel won't mind because otherwise he has to go outdoors (in cold winters that's no fun ;O) ).
The color of the walls turned out great, very warm. I love reading your memories of your grandparents, and that your grandfather was using what he had at hand, for making things in the house (mine did this too) ;O).
Manuel did a great job in making the shelves, using the boards and bricks, it does fit perfectly to the cabin.
I hope you will find the right sort of rugs for your cabin and that they can be printed on fabric. I often use a very thin cotton fabric and I love the faded print after printing it.
Stay safe and healthy, take care, dear Alex.
    Besos/Hugs, Ilona

  6. Hi Alex. The cabin stones look great and the colour is perfect. Well done on the carpets too. I love the printable fabrics. The fine cotton is perfectly scaled for minis and is so soft when the backing is removed. I have found it doesn’t fray much at all when cut and the backing removed, but you could try using a little Fray-stop if you did remove the backing. Take care over there. X

  7. How nice everything looks in this cabin. You installed the loo in a perfect place for it. I love the shelves between the bricks and as to the rugs, a little faded will be perfect for an old couple, especially if Manuel, like your your grandpa, may he rest in peace, likes to keep old things. You could, if you wish, make a string mat, there are many very easy DIY tutorials on Pinterest.
    Keep safe,
    Hugs, Drora

  16. I loved everything you showed - but most of all I'm in awe with your productivity! Phew, I wish I could say something in that range of myself... *sigh*

The progress on the cabin is stunning, the stone walls bring so much atmosphere... and so will the fireplace. I already imagine Manuel and his wife sitting in front of it... and being thankful that they don't have to got out in the cold whenever there's a need for doing what has to be done. And it was interesting to follow your "experiments" with creating rugs, especially by printing on fabric. The results are wonderful!

Keep on having fun - and take good care of yourself!
    Hugs

  19. Hi Alexandra! The cabin is starting to look like a Cabin! LOL! The stone wall turned out very well! And the toilet under the stairs is very realistic! :):) As for the carpet problems... it looks like you are solving them with your printer! I am learning the needlepoint way... it is not perfect, but I love to make them! I hope you stay safe and keep up the great minis! :)
